Service planned for Baby Boy Horry on 1-year anniversary

CONWAY, SC (WMBF) - A public memorial service has been set for Baby Boy Horry, the infant whose body was found in a bag in a ditch on Dec. 4, 2008.

Horry County Coroner Robert Edge says the service will be held at 3 p.m. on Friday at Hillcrest Cemetery to mark the one-year anniversary.

"Hopefully by having it, maybe the parents are out there and somebody will come forward and say 'That's my baby and I want him back.' That would certainly make everybody happy and maybe give them some peace and closure too," said Edge.

Edge hopes that the memorial service will help to keep the case in people's minds.

"This little child," said Edge, "his parents never came forward. He was abandoned, and we don't want him to be forgotten and certainly want him to be remembered."

Utility workers found the newborn around 4:15 p.m. Dec. 4, 2008, off of Highway 544 on Meadowbrook Drive. The baby's body was found near a street and wooded area by a subcontractor working for Horry County Electric.

According to Horry County Police Sgt. Robert Kegler, the baby was wrapped in a white canvas Bath & Body Works bag.

An autopsy on Baby Boy Horry's body revealed he was alive at the time of his birth.

Horry County Deputy Coroner Chris Burroughs said the child lived anywhere from two hours to two days.

Officials with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) developed a DNA profile of the newborn. Kegler said investigators could compare DNA samples of any viable suspects that are developed through the investigation to the DNA of Baby Boy Horry.

Police followed tips after the discovery, but we unable to determine a birth mother or find any suspects.

Baby Boy Horry was buried Dec. 18, 2008, with some 70 people gathered to remember the little boy that no one knew.

Everything for the funeral was donated, from the flowers to the casket and the gravesite itself.
