MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – Robert Hucks proved he's one of the best amateur golfers in our area, and now, he has the chance to show he's one of the best in the country.
"Figured I'd give it a shot and I ended up winning my flight," said Hucks, who is a member at The Dunes Golf and Beach Club.
That flight was at a qualifying event for the Nature Valley Amateur Championship. Hucks shot a 77 at the tournament held at TPC Myrtle Beach. Now, he'll head to TPC Sawgrass in Jacksonville, FL for the national tournament.
"I'm jacked up about it," said Hucks. "It will be the closest thing I've experienced to a real golf tournament. It'll be neat to get down there, play a real prestigious course - TPC Sawgrass. [I'll] get to play a course where all the big guys play. It'll be cool."
Hucks is excited to play on the same course that hosts The Players Championship and excited to bring his family along for the experience.
"I'm going to take my wife with me and take my 13-month-old son," said Hucks.
Hucks says he doesn't have any expectations for the tournament. He just hopes to have a good time. He's especially looking forward to TPC Sawgrass' most famous hole: The par-3 17th hole. It's a short island green which sees plenty of pros find the water.
Hucks hopes to fare a little better.
"If I get a dry ball on that hole, that would be fine with me," said Hucks.
