State Rep.: Atlantic Beach mayor 'unfit to serve'

Posted: Updated:

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - Less than a day after Atlantic Beach Mayor Retha Pierce called him a slave master, State Rep. Tracy Edge calls her "unfit."

Edge (R-North Myrtle Beach) fired back Friday after Pierce said, "[Edge] sounds like an old master. I should behave a little better? I've been falsely accused and you're not giving me my day in court. Oh master! Master! Rep. Edge, don't whoop me no more!"

In a statement released to the media, Edge said: "Clearly [Pierce] has serious problems that make her unfit to serve as Mayor."

Pierce's comments Thursday came on the heels of a letter Edge sent to Gov. Mark Sanford asking him to remove Pierce from office following an arrest on DUI charges. The latest is her third arrest in 2009. She also faces charges for trespassing and hit and run, as well as a fourth arrest in December 2007.

Town Council doubled Edge's request, asking Sanford themselves to remove the embattled mayor from office.

"On a personal level, I feel compassion for her and I hope she will get the help she needs to get her life in order," Edge said in his release Friday. "But the citizens of Atlantic Beach need and deserve a Mayor capable of doing the job. They don't have that now."

Pierce maintains her innocence in all three arrests, saying a conspiracy is in place to get her out of office.

"There are shadow people who are working with town council people," she said Thursday at a meeting of Concerned Citizens of the Town of Atlantic Beach. "Along with my own law enforcement here in the town of Atlantic Beach, they are working to really depict me as a criminal."
