Man convicted for firing gun into deputy's home

KINGSTREE, SC (WMBF) - A 27-year-old has been convicted on federal drug conspiracy and firearms charges following a four-day trial in Florence.

Pending a judge's decision, George Edward Mitchum, 27, of Kingstree, could face a 25 years to life in prison after retaliating against a law enforcement officer after his Oct. 11, 2008 drug arrest.

U.S. Attorney Walter Wilkins says Mitchum fired eight high-powered rifle rounds into the home of Williamsburg County Sgt. Vincent Staggers on Oct. 14, 2008.  A number of bullets lodged into the bedroom walls of Staggers' 9-year-old son.

Two days prior to the shooting, Staggers served a drug trafficking warrant on Mitchum at the jail, stemming from the early-morning arrest of Mitchum.  At the time of the arrest, Mitchum had cocaine in his truck and resisted arrest.

Eighteen convicted drug dealers, three of Mitchum's previous girlfriends and 10 law enforcement officers were called to the stand during the four-day trial to testify.

A sentencing is expected to occur after a presentence investigation report is completed.
