Former representative convicted for insurance fraud

Posted: Updated:

COLUMBIA, SC (WMBF) - A former state representative was convicted for insurance fraud in Charleston Wednesday.

After more than an hour of deliberation from the jury, Robert A. Kohn, 65, of Charleston, was convicted on mail fraud charges.

Kohn's fraud was found when he was working as an insurance consultant. Officials say Kohn gave a break to Knight's Services, a pipefitting and welding company. The fraud was discovered when a Knight's Services worker died when performing work at a shipyard.

Officials say Kohn saved Roy Knight's business, Knight's Services, approximately $370,000 in premiums over a three-year time span. Kohn fabricated Knight's Services' payroll figures in order to obtain lover premiums.

Kohn could face a maximum penalty of $250,000 and/or imprisonment of 20 years.

Judge P. Michael Duffy, who presided over the case, said sentencing will be imposed on a later date.
