National Geographic honors MB Boardwalk on Top 10 list
Myrtle Beach, SC -
MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - Myrtle Beach's newest multi-million dollar investment is basking in the national spotlight Wednesday after it was named a Top 10 U.S. Boardwalk by National Geographic.
The Myrtle Beach Boardwalk and Promenade joins a list of other seaside entertainment hot-spots across the nation, including the Atlantic City Boardwalk, Coney Island Boardwalk and Ocean Front Walk in Venice, CA.
When profiling the Grand Strand attraction, National Geographic described the boardwalk as "the hub of the town's activity."
"We're thrilled that the new oceanfront boardwalk has received so much national recognition in its first season," Mark Kruea, spokesman for Myrtle Beach, said. "The National Geographic ranking is yet another indication that everyone loves the new boardwalk."
Officials with the City of Myrtle Beach opened the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk and Promenade to the public in May, giving tourists and residents alike a new option for entertainment in the oceanfront town.
Running parallel to the ocean from 14th Avenue Pier south to the 2nd Avenue Pier, the 1.2 mile stretch of wooden planks are divided into three different sections to spotlight a variety of restaurants and attractions.
The northern portion of the boardwalk stretches from Pier 14 on 14th Avenue South to Plyler Park. Throughout the summer, Plyler Park is home to Myrtle Beach's "Hot Summer Nights" entertainment series, featuring live musical acts on Tuesday and Saturday nights.
Once at what city officials call the "mid-section" of the boardwalk, visitors enter a carnival atmosphere accompanied by restaurants, bars and gift shops.
On select weekends throughout the year, the boardwalk's mid-section plays host to a variety of events and festivals.
The southernmost end of the boardwalk, spanning from the previous Pavilion Amusement Park site to the 2nd Avenue Pier, is described by city officials as a "meandering oceanfront park." The final stretch of wood compliments the true beauty of nature found along the one-mile path.
On Wednesday nights throughout the summer, visitors and residents can catch a weekly fireworks display from the 2nd Avenue Pier at 9:30 p.m.
"It's a very inviting and attractive destination for our visitors and residents," Kruea said. "It's a tremendous asset for the whole downtown area."
MB Kahn, a Myrtle Beach-based contractor, spent nine months and close to $7 million on the project. City officials claim the boardwalk is made up of nearly 800,000 feet of lumber, 300,000 nails and 555,000 screws.
Other states with notorious oceanfront boardwalks on the National Geographic list include Virginia, Maryland, Massachusetts, Delaware and California.
