Newspaper: Ga. city sets goals for DUI arrests

Associated Press - April 28, 2010 8:14 AM ET

ROSWELL, Ga. (AP) - The Atlanta Journal-Constitution is reporting that police officers working overnight in Roswell have been ordered to meet goals for drunken driving arrests or face transfer to another shift.

The newspaper says it obtained a memo sent by a shift supervisor in January saying a goal of 25 DUI arrests a year has become mandatory. It says an officer was transferred off that shift less than two weeks later after not keeping up with other officers on the number of arrests.

The newspaper says DUI arrests have increased sharply this year in the north Fulton County city.

Roswell police say the DUI goal is 1 of several benchmarks for officer productivity and that to call it a quota is misleading.
