Coroner IDs victim in deadly Black River boating accident

Posted: Updated:

GEORGETOWN COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - A 78-year-old man has died following a boating accident near the Williamsburg and Georgetown County lines, according to a spokesman for the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources.

Rescue crews were dispatched to the distressed men near Red's Landing shortly after 6:45 p.m. Monday.

SCDNR spokesman Robert McCullough says two brothers were boating along the Black River when both fell into the water. While exact details about the incident are unclear, Rutledge Alford, 88, of Andrews, says he attempted to pull his brother, Nathan Alford, back into the boat after falling out. He told investigators he tied his brother to the side of the boat and brought him ashore at Red's Landing in Andrews.

Williamsburg County Coroner Harrison McKnight says the body of Nathan Alford, 77, of Andrews, has been sent to the Medical University of South Carolina for an autopsy to determine an exact cause of death.

Rutledge Alford remains hospitalized at the Georgetown Memorial Hospital, where he is recovering from injuries sustained in the accident.

The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources is investigating the incident.
