MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - Many Grand Strand restaurants will soon be reopening their doors for the new season. While hopes are high, many owners are also remaining cautious as they open for business this holiday weekend.
At the soon-to-be-renamed International Pancake and Omelette House on Kings Highway, renovations are well under way for the new season.
"It's just a fresh look," Anna Halaris explained. "Hopefully it will bring in some new customers and liven it up here."
They say the winter down-time is the best opportunity for general cleaning and painting.
The owners, who also own the Omega Pancake and Omelette House down the road, say business is good.
"There's not too [much of a] relationship between pancakes and the economy," Elnor Zeqiri added. "I think we are still doing very well; not in this period, but summertime was very good."
The Myrtle Beach Hospitality Association says the pancake house is not alone in its push to reopen this week.
"Obviously, we are shuttering the winter blues and a lot of things are kind of reopening," Hospitality Association CEO Stephen Greene said.
Halaris explained, "Valentines is a good weekend. There are a lot of people in town, the marathon is in town, so a good weekend for us to start."
"We all recognize that this has been a challenging time economically, and obviously tourism is trying to rebound," Greene added. "I think there's a lot of hope out there that this will be a good season, but a lot of questions still surround."
Greene says many businesses are being more cautious about hiring this season and will likely be slower to fill positions.
"Winter down is, as you know, bad," Halaris said. "So we're anticipating for a good season and this is the beginning."
Halaris says their experience has been that as long as you give good food and good service, the customers will keep coming back.
