MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) - Noted South Carolina painter Jonathan Green is the commencement speaker at Coastal Carolina University.

The artist whose vibrant paintings of South Carolina's Gullah culture are known worldwide will speak to the more than 700 students set to receive diplomas in Saturday ceremonies at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center.

Green also will be given an honorary doctor of fine arts degree.

His paintings of the Gullah scenes from the South Carolina coast are displayed in museums from California to Japan to Sierra Leone.

Gullah is the sea island culture of the descendants of slaves along the coast of the Carolinas.
