CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - After more than two years of planning and public meetings, MeadWestvaco has unveiled a master plan for a 72,000 acre tract near the South Carolina coast.
The land is on the east side of the Edisto River where development is spreading rapidly from nearby communities.
The plan unveiled Wednesday envisions three quarters of the land remaining green with conserved land, parks, trails and low-density development.
New communities will reflect Lowcountry towns like Beaufort and the old village of Mount Pleasant.
MeadWestvaco CEO John Luke says more than 1,000 people attended meetings or commented on the plan. More community meetings are being held this week and next.
The company says the plan will evolve over the next 50 years.
