CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - A tornado watch remained in effect for a portion of South Carolina as the state was pounded by heavy rains.
The National Weather Service posted a tornado watch for 22 of the state's 46 counties on Wednesday. A tornado watch remained in effect through 4 a.m. Thursday for eight eastern counties.
Rains swamped the coastline at high tide, snarling Charleston rush hour traffic and flooding intersections. National Weather Service forecaster Douglas Berry says a cold front moving through the state carries the potential for strong storms and hail between Columbia and the coast.
A high surf advisory is in effect through Thursday morning on the state's south coast. Forecasters say waves as high has 6 feet could break on the beaches.
