MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – Last year, the Myrtle Beach Seahawks ended a long state title drought with a Class 3A State Championship. This year, they're looked at as favorites to make it two in a row.
The Seahawks will face the Clinton Red Devils Saturday evening at 6 p.m. at Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia for this year's state championship. The Red Devils were a four seed—the lowest playoff seed—coming out of the Upper State, and surprised many by making it this far.
That hasn't changed anything about the Seahawks' preparation.
"They're definitely a Cinderella story," said Myrtle Beach head coach Mickey Wilson. "They've done a great job to get where they're at. Our kids know this is a championship game, anytime you get in a championship game the other team could beat you at any point. We're just going to have to play well."
Players were loose and upbeat before a Wednesday practice moved into the gym because of heavy rain forecasted in the area. The players were all business once practice begun, and know they'll have a challenge against Clinton.
"They're a hard hitting team, they're very physical, I've seen that," said Myrtle Beach quarterback Everett Golson. "We've been preparing. Hopefully we can come out and execute."
The Seahawks will leave Friday afternoon at 1 p.m. A parade is planned through Myrtle Beach Primary, Elementary and Middle Schools to send off the team.
