COLUMBIA, SC (WMBF) - Parents in South Carolina could have to abide by new child restraint laws should a bill amending the current system successfully make its way through the state legislator.
The bill, filed in the South Carolina House of Representatives on Nov. 17, aims at increasing the maximum age of a child who must be restrained in a child passenger restraint seat inside.
As proposed, the law would be applicable to children under 8 years old and would prohibit any child under the specified age to occupy a front passenger seat of a vehicle. The restriction, however, would not apply if the vehicle does not have a rear passenger seat or all rear seats are occupied by others under the age of 8.
Currently residing in the House Committee on Education and Public Works, the bill is sponsored by Rep. Bakari T. Sellers (D-Barnwell).
