WALTERBORO, SC (WCSC) - The deadly drive-by shooting on Nov. 9 shook up and angered the entire Walterboro community and the city and Crime Stoppers of the Lowcountry are offering a $6,000 reward.
The reward comes a day after the funeral for the three shooting victims.
"We hate to be defined by these violent acts of a few people," said Walterboro mayor Bill Young. "At the funeral, Reverend Stevens made the point that there's a time for everything and that it is time for the community to speak."
Police believe the promise of big dollars will get people talking about the case and possible suspects.
So far, 19-year-old Danziel Chapman is the lone suspect in jail, charged with one count of murder.
In the close-knit community, it's likely many people are afraid to talk, fearing retaliation. They also fear being labeled snitches. But investigators are confident there's at least one person out there who will come forward and give them the tip to crack the case.
"We're hoping somebody's conscience will realize this could have been their child," said Crime Stoppers Coordinator Cpt. Fred Bowie. "It could have been anybody's child out there that got killed."
Young added, "These are not good boys who went bad. These are bad guys, and we're going to do everything we can to get them off the street."
It's a community that hopes to silence the guns that delivered the deadly bullets.
"We want to solve this crime," Bowie commented. "That's the big issue here, is solving a crime and settling a community back down."
If you have any information, call Crime Stoppers at 843-554-1111. Tipsters can remain anonymous.
