MURRELLS INLET, SC (WMBF) - A group looking to preserve the Seafood Capital of South Carolina is hosting an oyster roast Saturday along the Marsh Walk in Murrells Inlet.
Non-Profit revitalization group Murrells Inlet 2020 says the event is their second largest fundraiser of the year. It will go to help fund projects like their Spring Tide Clean-Up and a new effort to beautify the medians along Bypass 17.
With more than 100 bushels of oysters being prepped for the event, it has been a long few days for Chedrick Butler and Jerome Smalls, better known as 'Bubba Love'. They say each bushel weighs fifty pounds and has to be dumped over a platform to be washed and readied for eating.
"It's a lot of twisting and shoving and turning," local celebrity Bubba Love said as he began the pressure washing process on the shells.
In all, he says the cleaning process involves about 20 hours worth of work.
"We wash five at a time it takes about 20 minutes to get them washed and another 10 minutes to get them like this: extra, extra clean," he explained.
The roast will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday with oysters being served up until 2:30 p.m. at Spud's Waterfront Dining parking lot on the Marsh Walk along with other food from local restaurants. Admission is free, but there is a $25 price tag for people looking to take advantage of the all-you-can-eat oyster offer.
