SCOTLAND COUNTY, NC (WMBF) - The Laurinburg and Scotland County Area Chamber of Commerce has received a $35,000 grant as part of the North Carolina Rural Center's Community Mobilization Grants Program, officials announced Wednesday.
The proposal, according to the chamber, will create workforce development programs, including a community directory and job resources expo. The Rural Center says the idea behind the grant is to spur community-driven responses to the poor economy.
Scotland County officials say the grant will help the county combat a growing unemployment problem.
“This grant means that we will be able to actually put into action some of the plans we have to further the economic revival of Scotland County,” said Theresa Lamson, chamber president.
The county-wide resources expo would provide job seekers with the tools they need to secure jobs. Agencies would be invited to share information on topics relevant to out-of-work Scotland County citizens such as job training and food and utility assistance.
