SUMMERVILLE, SC (WCSC) - A cold murder case from 1992 has been reopened with new hopes of tracking a killer.
James Alan Horton, 22, was found dead in a wooded area near Summerville in Berkeley County 17 years ago.Horton was a Charleston-based sailor. He'd been beaten, shot and had his hands tied behind his back.
That led investigators to believe Horton knew his killer and that the murder was premeditated. NCIS, or the Naval Criminal Investigative Service says DNA technology that wasn't around in 1992 gave them new leads.
Horton had been missing for two weeks when his body was found. Detectives want to talk to anyone who may have seen him before he went missing, October 30th 1992. Investigators are also re-interviewing Horton's shipmates.
Detectives say no crime tip is too small. They're urging anyone to come forward with any information now because they know more about the investigation than they did in 1992.
NCIS is working with Berkeley County deputies to help make a break in the case.
Horton was from Sherburne, NY.
