Students asked to play slave roles; field trips canceled

Posted: Updated:

HUNTERSVILLE, NC (WBTV) - A Union County Public Elementary School refuses to send its students back to Latta Plantation for field trips.

An incident involving three black Rea View Elementary School students is the reason for the decision. The students were picked to pretend like they were slaves.

This angered one of the parents and the school thought it was inappropriate.

Latta Plantation, located in Huntersville, is a circa 1800 cotton plantation and living history farm, located within Latta Plantation Nature Preserve.

The organization is supported in part by the Arts & Science Council and the Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation, its website says.
