MULLINS, SC (WMBF) - The Marion County economy will soon be getting a much-needed boost, following the announcement a multi-million dollar food processing and packaging facility will establish itself in Mullins.
SOPAKCO's 200,000 square foot state-of-the-art production facility will allow for the design, preparation and packaging of microwaveable meals. The facility, one of three in the Palmetto State, includes a research and development lab, test kitchen and pilot plant.
When operating at full capacity, the plant will employ more than 80 people, including food scientists, process engineers and packaging engineers.
"The opening of this new production facility, our third in South Carolina, represents our commitment to the Palmetto State," said SOPAKCO President Lonnie Thompson. " This is a great place to do business, we have a committed workforce, and our new multi-million dollar facility reflects our optimism for continued success."
The company, boasting 60 years in the processed foods industry, is among the world's three largest producers of prepared meals used by the U.S. military.
