SOUTH CAROLINA (WMBF) - The following are Veterans Day festivities being held in honor of the servicemen and women from around the Grand Strand and Pee Dee:
The Florence Veterans Park will hold its 2nd annual Veterans Day Ceremony at 11 a.m. on Wednesday. During the event, the park's newest monument, the Military Order of the Purple Heart monument, will be unveiled to honor those who have earned the Purple Heart Medal.
Due to potentially poor weather, the ceremony will be held at West Florence High School.
The ceremony's featured speaker will be one of the nation's highest ranking soldiers, Lt. Gen. William G. Webster Jr., commanding general of the Third U.S. Army.
Immediately following the ceremony, the American Soldier Photo Exhibit, located upstairs in the Florence Civic Center, will open to the public. The exhibit will run from Wednesday through Feb. 2, 2010.
The annual Dillon County Veterans Day ceremony will be held on Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. at Veterans Square at the Dillon City-County Complex in Dillon.
The guest speaker is Lt. Colonel Jon Regan Walters, USAR. LTC Walters is a 1984 graduate of The Citadel and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Field Artillery. He served as a Fire Support Officer in the 82nd Airborne Division before leaving active service.
LTC Walters is slated to take command of 2nd Battalion, 1st Training Brigade, Ft Bragg, North Carolina in the fall.
On Wednesday, the Coast RTA will offer free rides to all military veterans as a tribute to the men and woman who have served during wartime or peacetime. Veterans are asked to present a valid form of identification during boarding.
The town of Surfside Beach will be holding a Veterans Day service at Memorial Park at 2 p.m. Wednesday.
The public is invited to attend Veterans Day ceremonies honoring veterans and military personnel at 11 a.m. Wednesday on the Convention Center Plaza in Myrtle Beach. Music will precede the ceremony. This event is sponsored by the Grand Strand Patriotic Alliance.
