RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - A Robeson County businessman is the newest member of the North Carolina Senate.
Gov. Beverly Perdue's office said Wednesday the governor has appointed Michael Walters to serve the remainder of the 2-year term of the Senate seat vacated five weeks ago by David Weinstein.
A panel of Democratic leaders in the 13th Senate District covering Hoke and Robeson counties chose Walters last week. State law directs Perdue to appoint the party's choice.
Weinstein resigned from the Senate after 12 years to become director of the Governor's Highway Safety Program.
Walters' current term expires at the end of 2010.
