CONWAY, SC (WMBF) - Students from Coastal Carolina University had the opportunity to take a look behind the scenes Friday at one of the country's most popular sports - NASCAR.
NASCAR selected Coastal as one of six schools in the country participate in the program, where a select group of students complete weekly studies and plan a panel for students and NASCAR officials to interact.
Five Coastal students planned the events Friday, including Kevin Crout, a junior from Baltimore, MD; Paige Plyler, a senior from McKean, PA; Allen Brouwer, a senior from Toms River, NJ; Charlie Decker, a junior from South Plainfield, NJ; and Kendra Kolb, a senior from Portsmouth, RI.
Talia Mark of NASCAR Kinetics says this program gives students hands on experience to plan a sports marketing event for Nascar. She says Nascar was looking for a school close to a track, and CCU’s proximity to Darlington was the perfect match.
“We wanted an avid market,” explained Mark. "When we started getting applications in from Coastal, we got a lot of students saying ‘We're really NASCAR fans, we want to know more about the sport because we're NASCAR fans.’"
The six participating schools are competing for a chance to go to Miami to visit with NASCAR executives.
