Rural areas getting $1 million recovery money

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Eight South Carolina communities and agencies are receiving a total of $1 million in federal recovery money to help start or expand rural businesses in rural areas.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced the grants Tuesday as part of $15 million to 145 recipients nationwide.

Manning is receiving the largest South Carolina grant - $250,000.

Other grants go to the Have Faith Community Development Corporation in Alcolu, Salkehatchie Arts and the Williamsburg County Business Development Center.

Others include the Western Carolina Higher Education Commission, the Colleton Improvement Collaborative, the South Carolina Manufacturing Extension Partnership and the Mitney Project working to revitalize the west end of Georgetown.
