After trying to start her own newspaper in the third grade titled The Pittsburgh Golden News, A.J. Ross knew she had fallen in love with journalism and writing. Today, that passion for writing and the media has allowed her to transform from a young girl asking her friends to write news articles for her newspaper into a television news reporter at WMBF News in Myrtle Beach.
As A.J. transitioned though her education, she continued her fascination with the power the media had to touch the minds, hearts and spirits of the community. A.J. says that pursuing a career in journalism has humbled her in multiple ways, as she looks forward to the journey ahead in her career.
"What I love the most about my job is that I am never confined to my desk," explains A.J. "My career allows me the opportunity to meet a variety of interesting people and learn something new every day."
Now in Myrtle Beach, A.J. is looking forward to the fast-paced news environment across the Grand Strand and Pee Dee regions. What excites her most about reporting in Myrtle Beach is the level of activity throughout the various communities, and therefore "does not anticipate many slow news days" and plans to constantly stay on her toes.
What residents of the Grand Strand and Pee Dee won't see on camera is A.J.'s personal characteristic of being a tomboy at heart. A competitive athlete growing up, A.J. has participated in "almost every sport under the sun." Her natural passion for sports led her to a production assistant position for the world-wide leader of sports - ESPN - shortly after graduation from the John H. Johnson School of Communications at Howard University, located in Washington, D.C.
While at Howard University, A.J. worked with Howard University TV (WHUT-TV), a PBS station. During her time at WHUT-TV, A.J. wrote, produced and edited packages for a campus segment called ‘Spotlight' and more recently, has been invited back to serve as a sideline reporter for the Howard Homecoming football games.
