SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) - A 66-year-old Duncan man has been charged with threatening state employees over the telephone. The State Law Enforcement Division says Russell Clark Johnson was arrested yesterday and charged with threatening the life of a public employee and unlawful use of a telephone.

LEXINGTON, S.C. (AP) - A man has been sentenced to 20 years in the hit & run death of a University of South Carolina professor. William Craig Caughman was sentenced yesterday in the death of 36-year-old Toby Morriss.

MIAMI (AP) - The National Hurricane Center is changing the way it talks about storm surge in hopes that emergency officials, the media and the public can better understand the dangerous phenomenon. Storm surge is the hurricane hazard that poses the greatest threat to life and property. It is the abnormal rise in sea water during a hurricane.

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - A new film shows the changes made at the Charleston Fire Department after nine firefighters died while fighting a furniture store blaze. "Charleston 9: The Ultimate Sacrifice" was released Wednesday. It was produced for the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation and has interviews with firefighters, counselors, community leaders and survivors of the fire at the Sofa Super Store.
