MIAMI (AP) - Forecasters at the hurricane center in Miami say a tropical depression is moving west in the Atlantic and is expected to degenerate over the next few days. The depression is centered about 800 miles east of the Lesser Antilles and is moving west at about 18 mph.
(AP) - Historically black colleges and universities have played a key role in educating young African-Americans. But HBCUs have struggled to remain open due to declining enrollment and funding. An expert on HBCUs says such schools remain important, serving many students who otherwise might not go to college.
WINNSBORO, S.C. (AP) - Fairfield County Sheriff Herman Young says he is stepping down after more than 20 years in office. Young says he's leaving due to health reasons. Young says being sheriff is a stressful job and he thinks it is time to take care of himself and spend more time with his family. Gov. Haley called Young is an amazing public servant.
CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - A Coast Guard cutter has reached a couple in distress on a sailboat about 130 miles off the coast. The Tarpon reached the 38-foot Sea Heather this morning. A man and woman on the boat say they were exhausted after battling the weather.
