ARLINGTON, TX —The Texas Rangers announced Friday the organization has entered into a four-year Player Development Agreement with the High-A Myrtle Beach Pelicans extending through the 2014 season.

The agreement was announced this afternoon at a press conference at BB&T Coastal Federal Field in Myrtle Beach, SC. As part of the agreement, the Rangers will play an exhibition game in Myrtle Beach on Tuesday, March 29 against an opponent to be determined.

The Rangers are returning to the Carolina League for the first time since having a farm club in Salem, Virginia in 1986. Texas had its High-A club in the Florida State League at Port Charlotte from 1987-2002 and in the California League at Stockton in 2003-04 and at Bakersfield since 2005.

"The Texas Rangers are pleased to be entering into this agreement with the Myrtle Beach Pelicans," commented Rangers General Manager Jon Daniels. "This is an outstanding franchise and a great fit for us with our South Atlantic League affiliate in Hickory, North Carolina. We anticipate a great partnership with the Pelicans."

The Pelicans began play in 1999 as the High-A Carolina League affiliate of the Atlanta Braves. The Managing Partner of Myrtle Beach Pelicans LP is Chuck Greenberg, who serves as Managing Partner and CEO of the Texas Rangers. Greenberg's group, Rangers Baseball Express, completed its purchase of the Rangers last month.

"On behalf of the Pelicans ownership group, we are excited to welcome the Rangers to Myrtle Beach," commented Greenberg, who headed the group that purchased the franchise in 2006. "Texas' scouting and player development efforts have produced probably the top minor league organization in professional baseball, and the Pelicans fans can expect to see a number of talented young players in the years to come."

The Pelicans, who play at the 5,200 seat BB&T Coastal Federal Field, hosted the 2010 California-Carolina League All-Star Game.

With today's agreement, the Rangers have completed their minor league alignment for 2011. The club signed a four-year PDC with the Triple-A Round Rock Express of the Pacific Coast League on Thursday.  Last month the Rangers extended their Player Development Contracts with the Double A Frisco RoughRiders of the Texas League for four years through the 2014 season and with the Low A Hickory Crawdads of the South Atlantic League and the Short Season A Spokane Indians of the Northwest League for two years each through 2012.
