Medical malpractice suit leads to $3M settlement in Horry Co.

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - An Horry County jury has awarded a $3 million medical malpractice settlement to the family of a 25-year-old woman who died after seeking medical attention in 2002.

J. William Parker III, of the Mike Kelly Law Group, said Kelly Fay died in 2002 from an infection that stemmed from a diagnosed kidney stone.

After her diagnosis at the South Strand Emergency Room, Kelly was discharged and due to check-up with a urologist the following Monday. Prior to the appointment, Fay's family said she passed away from an infection.

An Horry County jury found Friday the medical providers did "not meet the accepted standard of care in failing to take appropriate vital signs and perform basic testing." The testing, Parker said, would have likely identified Fay's infection.

Jury members divided the fault of Fay's death between the Grand Strand Regional Medical Center and an attending emergency room physician.
