SLED: Officer accused of stealing money during DUI arrest

Posted: Updated:

DARLINGTON, SC (WMBF) - An officer with the Darlington Police Department is on the other side of the law Thursday, accused of stealing money during a DUI arrest.

South Carolina Law Enforcement Division spokeswoman Jennifer Timmons says Farrell A. Bethea, 23, of McColl, has been charged with petit larceny and misconduct in office. According to arrest warrants, Bethea took $460 from the wallet of Willie Bethea Jr. while conducting a DUI arrest. The warrants claim Bethea admitted the crime to SLED agents.

After learning about the alleged crime on Feb. 14, officials with the Darlington Police Department requested the assistance of SLED to help investigate the incident.

Darlington Police Chief Jay Cox says Bethea is no longer employed with the agency.

Following a bond hearing Thursday, Bethea was released from jail on a personal recognizance bond.
