SC teachers gather for single-gender training

Associated Press - March 20, 2010 4:25 AM ET

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Hundreds of South Carolina teachers will gather at a workshop to learn about single-gender education.

South Carolina is the national leader in offering single-gender programs in public schools. About 160 schools offer boy-only and girl-only classes. The number had skyrocketed since state schools Superintendent Jim Rex hired the country's first and only statewide single-gender coordinator in 2007.

However, the number has dropped from 220 last spring due to budget cuts. Officials say schools couldn't offer the classes because they had fewer teachers.

The Education Department expects more than 275 teachers to attend Saturday's workshops at Berkeley Middle School in Moncks Corner.

Other choices offered in public schools include Montessori classes and evening high school.
