Small SC town acquires depot for makeover

Associated Press - March 10, 2010 11:15 AM ET

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - A small South Carolina town that was the first taste of the Marine Corps for hundreds of thousands of recruits is acquiring the train depot where they arrived for a half century.

The hamlet of Yemassee is about 35 miles northwest of the Marine Corps Depot at Parris Island. Town council on Tuesday approved acquiring the closed depot from CSX Transportation.

Susan Sledz of the Yemassee Revitalization Corp. says plans are to return the station to its appearance in the first half of the 20th Century.

The town also hopes to restore a building that served as a reception station and barracks in Yemassee for incoming recruits for decades. Town officials estimated 500,000 recruits came through Yemassee before the barracks closed in the 1960s.
