WMBF, WBTW meteorologists go head-to-head for good cause

Updated:

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - Help WMBF Storm Team Chief Meteorologist Rob Hatchell come out on top for the Battle of the Bobblehead to benefit the United Way and see Hatchell's mug turned into a novelty toy.

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans have teamed up with WMBF News and WBTW News 13 to introduce the Battle for the Bobblehead, a local promotion that will benefit a local charity.

From March 8-31, fans can log onto MyrtleBeachPelicans.com and vote for their favorite local meteorologist to be immortalized as a bobblehead to be given away on Aug. 20 at BB&T Coastal Field. Hatchell and WBTW's Frank Johnson will face off in the friendly competition.

Hatchell is hoping to pull out the win and help the United Way.

"I think everyone would like to see themselves as an action figure. I guess this is as close as I'll ever get," Hatchell joked. "Seriously though, the honor is in representing the United Way, who help so many people in our area with a hand up. I hope we can take home the prize and hand over the generous donation from the Myrtle Beach Pelicans to a great organization where we know it will be put to good use with the United Way."

A native of Florence, SC, Hatchell earned his bachelor's degree from UNC-Charlotte and a graduate degree from Mississippi State. His first job in TV meteorology came with WFXL-TV in Albany, Georgia. Three years later, Rob bolted for the Alabama capital, joining WFSA 12 News in Montgomery before moving to Myrtle Beach in May 2008. He and his wife Kelly have one daughter, Caroline, and a new baby boy due in June.

Log onto the MyrtleBeachPelicans.com and enter your name and email to vote. You can vote once every 24 hours - the more you vote, the better for the United Way. The Pelicans will donate $500 to the charity of the winning meteorologist, and $100 to the runner-up.
