CHARLESTON, SC (WMBF) - South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford has nearly a year left in office, but his marriage is almost over. Sanford's divorce from his wife, Jenny, is expected to be finalized on Friday in family court in Charleston.
A court roster published in Charleston County reveals a family court judge in Charleston County will preside over the Sanford's appearance in court Friday. It will mark the first time in state history that a sitting governor has divorced.
The first lady filed for divorce in December on the grounds of adultery. The former Wall Street executive said she had unsuccessfully tried to reconcile with her husband after he disappeared last summer, returning to publicly confess a yearlong affair with an Argentine woman he called his soulmate.
In court filings, Sanford has admitted the affair and has asked a judge to approve his wife's request to end their 20-year marriage.
Sanford is the first sitting South Carolina governor to divorce. In December, he also became the first governor to be censured by the state's lawmakers.
Jenny Sanford and the couple's four sons moved out of the Governor's Mansion last year. She has released a memoir about her ordeal.
