MARION, SC (WMBF) - The City of Marion is making smoke detectors available to those residents who are unable to afford them.
City officials say Marion firefighters often assist residents who can't afford to purchase smoke alarms and those who have difficulties installing the detectors or alarms themselves. Smoke detectors or alarms are available from the city's fire department on Bond Street.
"We can work together to make sure that every resident in Marion is protected by a working smoke alarm," said Chief Alan Ammons.
According to the National Fire Protection Association, working smoke alarms cut in half the chances of someone dying in a fire. Roughly two-thirds of all home fire deaths result from fires in homes with no smoke alarms or with no working smoke alarms.
Marion residents who need assistance may contact the City of Marion Fire Department at (843) 423-8602.
