$7,000 in rare coins stolen from Myrtle Beach man

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - Myrtle Beach Police are investigating after a man reported nearly $7,000 in coins was taken from his car while he was at a grocery store.

According to a police report, the 85-year-old man said he parked his vehicle at the Bi-Lo located at 1241 38th Ave. North around 6 p.m. on Jan. 13 and returned about 30 minutes later to find that a leather bag containing more than $6,950 in coins had been stolen.

The victim told police he had left the vehicle unlocked because the locks didn't work.

The victim reported the following coins stolen:

  • Three $2.50 dollar gold Indian coins valued at $325 each
  • One MS61 silver $20 coin valued at $1,700
  • One 1915 gold $1 coin valued at $950
  • One gold coin valued at $2,000 (no further description)
  • One 1853 1-cent piece valued at $500
  • One German Taller coin valued at $125
  • Four misprint/mistake coins valued at $15 each
  • One $5 gold piece valued at $600
  • One silver dollar valued at $40

The victim said there were likely more coins in the bag, but could only remember those listed above, adding that anyone who knows coins would recognize them.

Investigators are checking with the store for possible surveillance video of the crime.
