MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - Studebaker's nightclub in Myrtle Beach is closing its doors, and that's coming as a shock to many, including some of its employees.

"I was expecting to get ready to go to work tonight," explained Amanda Strickland, a former bartender. "I was washing my laundry, getting ready to go, then I just got a phone call."

It's from that phone call that Strickland learned the news of the closure.

Thursday, Studebakers closed it's doors for the last time. Owner Don Cauthen says business was slow even during the summer season.

Some local business owners near the club say the weak economy may be behind the closing, which may affect more than the club itself.

"Any business that closes may have an effect on all of us," said Junior Dix, who works at the nearby barber shop. "It's simply because the money that comes in filters down to all of us."

However, some, like Chris Williams, say part of the reason business is slow has to do with Myrtle Beach anti-bike rally laws which were effective in removing the rallies from the city.

"[City Council has] nothing to replace it with," Williams said of the rallies. "It's a clear indication of how they failed small business owners like them and myself."

Williams, who owns the bar next door, believes Myrtle Beach is losing an important part of it's history now that the 29-year-old club is shutting its doors, and he's taking it personally.

"It's been here so long," he said. "Their employees are not only our customers, but also our friends."

Old friends who are now looking for new work.

"This is my only job," said Strickland. "It has been for a while. So I guess I'm just going to have to look for another one."
