Women's basketball falls to Alaska Anchorage in the Great Alaska Shootout, 89-47

ANCHORAGE, AK - The Coastal Carolina University women's basketball dropped its first game in the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska shootout to host Alaska Anchorage 89-47 on Tuesday, Nov. 24 at Sullivan Arena.

The Seawolves jumped on a 12-1 run to start the game with Nicci Miller scoring six of the points with lay-ins. Kendra Reynolds scored the first two field goals for the Chanticleers to make the score 18-5 at 13:14 left in the first half. With seven minutes left in the first stanza, Gruwell hit a three-pointer that was followed quickly with a pair of free throws to stretch the lead to 34-9. Alaska Anchorage finished the half up 46-18 and with 27 points off of Chanticleers turnovers, and shooting over 50 percent from both the field and beyond the arc.

The Seawolves scored another three of their six second half three-pointers in a 13-3 run to begin the second half.  The Chanticleers did not recover as Alysa Horn added two points from the stripe that gave the Seawolves their largest lead at 89-41 with 1:29 left in the game.

The Seawolves posted four players in double figures with Miller scoring with a game-high 24 points. Alaska Anchorage shot 54 percent from the field. They out rebounded the Chants 35-33.

Sydnei Moss and Jessica Noll scored a team-high 10 points, and Olivia Irick added nine points. Noll grabbed a team-high six rebounds and Taylor Epley had a career-high five. 

The Seawolves are now 3-3 on the season and will play in the championship for the fourth consecutive year. The loss brings the Chants to 2-2 in the season, and is its first loss to a Division II school since 2004-05 against Anderson 77-74. Coastal will play in the consolation game tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. against Western Carolina.
