CHARLESTON, SC (WMBF) - Cycle South Carolina, a six-day annual charity bike tour, opened registration to the public on Nov. 16.
The weeklong event, taking place June 13-18, 2010, will take riders on a bike tour through South Carolina's historical places. All of the proceeds from the ride go to the United Methodist Relief Center, a non-profit that works to rebuild and rehabilitate the homes of low-income families in the rural areas of South Carolina.
Cycle South Carolina, like many state bike tours, is about having fun, staying healthy, and raising awareness. The United Methodist Relief Center has been providing families with safe, warm, and dry homes for more than 20 years.
For one month only, CSC will be offering a discounted "early bird" registration fee. Early registration saves riders $100 and secures a spot on the tour; riders are limited to 500. The registration fee includes an overnight camping space each night, stocked rest stops, daily cue sheets audited with GPS for accuracy, showers, luggage transportation, vehicle support with radio communication, bicycle technical support, a headband and t-shirt, evening entertainment, and limited secondary medical coverage. Meals (dinner and breakfast) are available for purchase.
CSC is making its comeback in 2010 after a seven-year hiatus. This year's tour is in memory of John Byran, CSC's original organizer, who died earlier in 2009. The tour will begin and end in Mt. Pleasant, at the newly-completed Moultrie Middle School. From Moultrie, the riders will bike to Moncks Corner, Sumter, Orangeburg, Walterboro, and then back to Charleston. Cyclists will ride approximately 70-75 miles a day, totaling almost 450 miles.
