HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - New guidelines published by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists called for fewer pap smears for women in their 20s after a research panel released a study that said women could wait until 50 to have mammograms.
Maria Smith, of Myrtle Beach, said she's still going to get checked and she will take her daughters with her.
"I'm going to encourage them to go and get checked," Smith said. "I don't care how much it costs."
At 25 years old, Smith was diagnosed with cervical cancer, and as a child she watched her mother battle several forms of cancer.
"If you don't take care of yourself, nobody else will," she said.
And her daughter Anna Smith agreed, saying she was still getting her annual checks regardless of the new guidelines.
"I think you still need to worry about it because anybody can get sick," Anna said. "You just have to catch it early and be careful," she continued.
