FLORENCE, SC (WMBF) - Officials from Francis Marion University have announced a scholarship has been established in honor of a Marion High School senior who drowned in the Little Pee Dee River in May.
The Jonathan Chase Lee Scholarship has been established by his parents, David and Shana Lee, and his extended family.
Lee, a senior at Marion High School, drowned in the Little Pee Dee River on May 22, just months before he was expected to begin classes as a freshman at Francis Marion. Family members say it was fitting to establish a scholarship at the university in his honor.
“The university community is honored to have Chase’s family pay tribute to his memory in this way,” said Jay Dowd, executive director of the FMU Foundation and vice president for development.
Prior to his drowning, Lee had completed all requirements needed for graduation and was awarded the Life Scholarship to attend Francis Marion.
The Jonathan Chase Lee Scholarship will benefit a student of Marion High School who is also a resident of Marion. The student must demonstrate financial need.
Additional contributions can be made to this fund at any time. Contributions should be made payable to:
