SC college campuses mark Hunger-Homeless week

Associated Press - November 16, 2009 4:05 AM ET

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina college students are doing their part to raise awareness of hunger and homelessness nationwide as the holiday season approaches.

Charleston Mayor Joe Riley reads a hunger proclamation Monday at The College of Charleston after which students participate in the Missouri Community Action Poverty Simulation.

The well-known exercise has students taking on roles of the homeless, disabled, senior citizens and other who may not have enough money to make ends meet.

Up the coast, Coastal Carolina University, which scheduled a food drive last weekend, holds a Feed Hungry Hearts with the Arts event on Tuesday.

Works by both students and professionals will be sold with the proceeds going to fight poverty.
