NC's Amtrak kicks off station recycling program Sunday

Posted: Updated:

RALEIGH, NC (WMBF) - State-sponsored North Carolina's Amtrak kicks off its station recycling program on America Recycles Day on Sunday, Nov. 15.

The program will give passengers an easy "go green" option to recycle their aluminum cans, plastic bottles and newspapers and magazines while still at the train station.

A group of four permanent recycling receptacles have been installed at select stations including Selma, Burlington, High Point, Salisbury and Kannapolis. There are plans to expand the program to other North Carolina stations in the future. Passengers will also find clearly labeled recycling containers on board the Piedmont train.

"Our passenger train program continues to add convenient ‘go green' options for our passengers every time they travel," said Patrick Simmons, rail director for the NC Department of Transportation. "Our station recycling program gives riders one more reason to choose train travel as a safe, efficient and environmentally friendly transportation option."

Prospective passengers can receive free information and giveaways about North Carolina's Amtrak new station recycling program and recycling options in their community this Sunday by visiting stations at Selma, Burlington, High Point, Salisbury and Kannapolis. A list of station locations and hours is attached.

America Recycles Day aims to raise awareness about the importance of recycling and buying recycled products.

The Piedmont and Carolinian trains are sponsored by NCDOT and paid for through state funding, Amtrak and passenger fares. North Carolina's Amtrak fleet of two trains provides daily service to Raleigh, Greensboro, Charlotte, nine other North Carolina cities, and to the Northeast. Complete schedule and train information is available at www.bytrain.org. Reservations are required. Tickets can be purchased at ticket windows, automated ticket kiosks at all stations, except Cary or online at Amtrak.com.
