SOUTH CAROLINA (WMBF) - The South Carolina Department of Commerce has announced a Greenville-based construction company has been awarded the design-to-build contract for North Charleston's new Boeing 787 Dreamliner facility.
The BE&K Building Group and Turner Construction, with help from design partner BRPH, were awarded the construction rights after delivering two previous buildings at Charleston's current Boeing facilities.
The company's regional office in Greenville will now serve as the headquarters for the design-build tea, which officials say is currently in the process of mobilizing the North Charleston site.
"From construction jobs to the impact this activity will have on small businesses and subcontractors throughout or state, this is truly an exciting time for South Carolina," said State Secretary of Commerce, Joe Taylor.
On Friday afternoon, South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford praised Boeing's decision to use a South Carolina-based contractor for the project, describing it as an exciting step in the revolutionary partnership between Boeing and the state.
Sanford says Friday's announcement could put into motion a potential 2,000 construction jobs in the Lowcountry, providing much-needed employment relief in the Palmetto State.
The jobs, he adds, are immediate and not tied to state incentives proposed to the company.
"It's also telling that Boeing's chosen general contractor is from the Upstate, providing further evidence that Boeing's decision to land in North Charleston will have positive ripple effects throughout the state," he commented.
