HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – Three businesses will have to relocate to make room from the Backgate Interchange Project, says Mike Barbee of the South Carolina Department of Transportation.
Those three businesses include the Kangaroo gas station,Jiffy Lube and the Subway.
Chuck Case, vice president of operations at Case Group Subway, says the company is looking for places to relocate.
"We'll be sorry to leave. We’re gonna stay there as long as we possibly can, making subs for the public,” explained Case.
Case says that when the Department of Transportation notifies them that they have to move, they'll have 30 days to do so. However, Case says he does agree that this interchange will be helpful to traffic in the area.
“I think it’s needed,” said Case, “and it’s just unfortunate for us.”
The Jiffy Lube had a sign posted on their door Wednesday explaining the reason for their relocation as the Socastee Interchange Project.
Workers at the Kangaroo say they haven’t heard anything about when the relocation date will be; however, they do say they plan to stay open until that time.
Barbee says utility work will start in the area in November and construction on the overpass will begin next fall.
