CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Conductor David Stahl is leaving daily direction of South Carolina's Charleston Symphony Orchestra after 25 years as music director.
The symphony announced Tuesday it's seeking a new music director as Stahl transitions to laureate conductor in three years.
Stahl will continue serving as music director of an orchestra - the Bavarian Staatstheater am Gaertnerplatz - in Munich, Germany, as well as performing guest engagements worldwide.
The 59-year-old Stahl came to Charleston in 1984. He says it's been a privilege but it's time to think about new leadership for the orchestra established in 1936.
Beginning next season, candidates for the conductor's job will be invited to serve as guest conductors before a replacement is named.
