MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - More fortified homes are being built in the Grand Strand, giving homes more protection against natural disasters such as hurricanes.
Diane and Leonard Chuderewicz bought a fortified home and believe they'll be in good shape should a storm threaten the Grand Strand.
Vice President of Classic Home Building and Design, Berkley White, said the homes are much stronger and include windows that can withstand 150 mph winds.
"The sliding glass doors are made with hurricane glass, which means that it's actually three pieces of glass," he said.
The foundation of the home is also different. In most homes, the foundation is made out of wood, but in a fortified home, they are filled with six inches of concrete and steel, which is used on the exterior walls.
The roof is made with a membrane, so if shingle happens to fly off during a storm, rain won't get inside.
There's also a discount on insurance if you decide to buy a fortified home. The cost of a fortified home depends on which options you select. Getting a home fortified usually adds 3 to 10 percent to the total cost.
