ATLANTIC BEACH,SC (WMBF) - Atlantic Beach is no longer moving forward with plans for a fall bike rally.
Town Manager William Bookers said the town doesn't have enough resources, but some of the people who attended Tuesday night's town council meeting disagree.
"I think that's a poor excuse," said Atlantic Beach resident to-be Rev. Wendy Price. "The resources are there."
Booker said the town might have been able to make a go of it, but the timing just was not right.
"I think we probably could have made it possible had we had all the right resources and energy and time to pull it off," he commented.
Booker explained the spring bike rally brought in more than $40,000 and admitted the fall bike rally could have done the same. But there was one major problem: leadership.
"There was a lot of interest and a lot of volunteers, but someone has to lead that effort," he said. "I'm not an event planner and I'm putting all of my efforts into being a good town manager."
Price said that's another poor excuse because she knows volunteers that worked on bike rally committees in the past who would have planned a fall bike rally free of charge.
"I don't think the effort was made by this government to reach out to this community and ask for help," she said.
Booker laid the blame at his feet: "I just wasn't able to follow through to make it happen."
