Hundreds hope to break skinny dipping record

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WMBF) - Breaking a record in your birthday suit - that's what hundreds are going to do this weekend in North Carolina.

The Whispering Pines Resort in Ocean Isle is trying to set a Guinness World Record by gathering a record number of people to go swimming, wearing nothing but a smile.

It's one of an estimated 240 clubs in the nation registered with the American Association for Nude Recreation, where on Saturday, people will belly flop in the buff to set a record.

Nudist Gloria Waryas says the resort is a long way from what she calls the "textile world." She says being in the idyllic setting of Whispering Pines being naked is only natural.

"People enjoy being nude," said Waryas.

"When you take your clothes off, all your inhibitions, you can just let go!" agreed Lisa Temple, a fellow Whispering Pines member.

Both women say they plan on skinny dipping this Saturday.

"I'm definitely gonna participate, I definitely want to be counted. I just think it's phenomenal," explained Waryas.

However, these underdressed overachievers say it's about more than the record. It's about keeping an open mind.

"We create one of the world's largest tourism industries," said Waryas.

"Stand in a breeze one day naked one day and you'll find out," laughed Temple.

The hundreds of clubs will all be participating at the same time around the country, as they say, at 3 p.m., eastern nudist time.
