COLUMBIA, SC (WCSC) - In an exclusive interview just hours before his first cabinet meeting since returning from Argentina Wednesday, Gov. Mark Sanford told the Raycom News Network he would not resign as governor of South Carolina Friday.
"There's all kinds of conjecture about making some big announcement... there's no larger message other than meeting with the cabinet," Sanford said.
When asked directly if he was going to resign, Sanford's response was short: "No," the governor said.
Sanford has been at the center of a personal and political scandal since leaving the country last Thursday and then disclosing a year-long romantic affair with an Argentine businesswoman on Wednesday.
On Thursday, Sanford said he would pay back any costs to the state for trips to Argentina in which he met with his mistress.
