MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - At the start of CCU's charity golf tournament, Tyler Thigpen was introduced by Chanticleer head coach David Bennett as the starting quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs. That title may be a little optimistic, but that doesn't bother Thigpen.
The former CCU star was in town for the golf tournament, but will return to Kansas City to get back to Chiefs' OTAs. There were plenty of questions about the budding quarterback controversy between he and former New England QB Matt Cassell, but Thigpen says he doesn't focus on it.
"Right now it's not a competition," Thigpen said. "We're just trying to get better as a team and make the offense better."
Thigpen also said he's enjoying playing with Cassell, and has enjoyed getting to know him.
"He's a phenomenal guy," said Thigpen. "Couldn't ask for a better guy to be competing against. I'm really excited, looking forward to working with him this year."
Thigpen was also happy to get away from summer practice, even for a little while.
"Hadn't been able to play much golf, being back in Kansas City," said Thigpen. "We're practicing pretty much four days a week. It's nice to be able to get back here, back to a place I call home and get out and play some golf."
Other celebrities playing in the golf tournament included former University of Kentucky and current University of Minnesota basketball coach Tubby Smith and Indiana Pacers guard Marquis Daniels.
